About Us Supporting our communities
Johnson Controls provides major financial support for organizations and programs that benefit the communities where we live and work
Johnson Controls and our employees contribute millions of dollars a year to worthwhile organizations and programs. While many of these are in the greater Milwaukee area where the company is headquartered, corporate and employee contributions also go to recipients in places all across the U.S. where Johnson Controls has a presence. Why?
Chuck Harvey, vice president of Diversity and Public Affairs at Johnson Controls, says, "We are a triple bottom line company. That means we're financially responsible to investors and employees and good stewards of our environment. But we're equally responsible for being highly supportive of the communities where we live and work."
The dollars are significant. So is the good they accomplish.
For example, the Johnson Controls Foundation focuses on four key areas -- performing arts, education, health, and social services -- that enhance the vitality of local communities and the well being of the people who live there. For example, Foundation recipients include:
- United Way of Greater Milwaukee, supporting a broad range of programs to improve people's lives and meet the basic needs of individuals and families.
- United Performing Arts Fund, supporting organizations throughout southeastern Wisconsin that offer performances and artistic development for education and entertainment.
- Discovery World, whose exhibits and learning labs raise awareness for protecting the environment.
- United Negro College Fund, enabling thousands of students from all ethnic and racial backgrounds and who are often the first in their families to attend college to get the education they want and deserve.
- Real Life 101 Scholarship Fund, improving higher educational opportunities for at-risk inner city youth.
- Froedtert Hospital in the western Milwaukee suburbs, providing much-needed medical care while training the next generation of physicians.
- Focus HOPE, located in Michigan, offering practical solutions to the problems of hunger, economic disparity, inadequate education, and racial divisiveness.
Continuing support even in hard times
During the economic downturn of the last two years, organizations all over the country that depend on charitable contributions experienced a significant drop-off in those contributions.
Such was not the case for organizations supported by Johnson Controls.
Chuck Harvey said, "Johnson Controls, through our Foundation and the generosity of our employees, continued to give at levels indicative of our mission of supporting sustainable communities. We did that because we felt even more of an obligation to support individuals and organizations who'd hit a rough patch."
Mutual benefits abound
Supporting community organizations financially benefits those organizations and the people they serve. It also benefits the company. For example, colleges and universities aided by Johnson Controls produce the talent pool the company draws on. Not only that, but schools, colleges and universities are an important market for Johnson Controls. The same is true for hospitals whose programs Johnson Controls supports financially.
And because Johnson Controls employees care deeply about helping others, financial support of worthwhile programs and organizations helps make Johnson Controls their employer of choice.
A long legacy of community involvement continues
Johnson Controls' community involvement offers plenty of benefits to go around and has done so for a long time. "For 125 years, our success has depended on our customers and employees," Harvey said. "If we strengthen the support we give our communities and society in general, our company should continue to be successful, because what's good for the communities where we live and work is good for Johnson Controls."
