There are great technician jobs available at Johnson Controls.

Union positions

Mechanic Equipment Service Tradesman: This position reports into our branch truck-based teams and is responsible for providing regular, scheduled preventative maintenance services on mechanical equipment and systems.

Mechanic Apprentice: Apprentices work under the direct supervision of a Journeyman and service both pneumatic control systems and mechanical equipment. Apprentices can provide preventive maintenance service, general building maintenance, some repair work and assist Journeyman as needed on project work.

Sample Union Career Path:
Tradesman ---> Apprentice ---> Journeyman ---> Foreman

Non-union Positions

Service Technician: Service Technicians will service, repair, install and commission electronic control systems and facility management systems.

Other: Johnson Controls also has Systems branches that hire CareerConnect graduates. Some positions to consider include Electrical Installer and Systems Technician.

Sample Non-Union Career Path:
Service Tech ---> Controls Tech ---> Sr. Controls Tech ---> Lead Controls Tech

Leadership Opportunities

Both career paths offer opportunities for leadership roles. Many Foreman and Sr. Controls Techs have advanced into Service Manager and/or Branch Managers. Additionally, Johnson Controls boasts a Service+ Technical Excellence program (S+TEP), which allows both union and non-union technicians to work toward becoming Master Technicians in their field of expertise.

Required Skills

HVAC Professionals need technical skills to be successful. Below is a partial list of required skills. Please note, not all of these technical skills are required for our entry-level positions.
  • Identify components in air and water-based cooling/heating systems.
  • Read blueprints and engineered drawings
  • Understand electricity
  • Understand how equipment work in a system
  • Understand preventive, predictive, and proactive maintenance strategies
  • Understand how to troubleshoot equipment/system problems
  • Repair equipment as needed
  • Install new equipment as required

It is also critical that our HVAC professionals are great communicators. Our technicians work at customer sites daily so each technician needs to speak well, write well, be able to provide quotes on the spot and build relationships.
