Building Efficiency Greening Public Housing
Green and Healthy Environments for Residents
Public Housing Authorities are being encouraged to improve the energy and water efficiency of their housing assets. By making these improvements, authorities can save money both through their energy bills and through the ongoing costs to run their facilities.A secondary benefit to improving the housing assets is an environmental benefit. A “green” building is better for the air we breathe – both inside and out.
- Johnson Controls includes renewable energy components in our housing projects. This means reduced emissions and some protection from volatile energy prices. Using a solar application to heat the water in the building is an example of renewable energy at work – especially popular in multi-unit housing facilities.
- Water conservation techniques are critical in housing environments. Over 79% of the water used in a home is used in bathing or flushing, so a lot can be gained from improving the faucets, showerheads and toilets, just to name a few.
- Lighting, heating and air conditioning controls and systems, ventilation, insulation, occupancy sensors in common areas – all of these provide opportunities for improvement and "greening".
- Innovation manager gives custom ideas based on each individual environment and location.
