  • The ‘Green Office Initiative’ was implemented at BP's Eastern Hemisphere Business Hub in Sunbury, UK - a program designed to reduce the impact of work practices and buildings on the environment
  • Johnson Controls was selected to secure ISO 14001 accreditation for BP and increase the volume of office waste recycled, with targets to move from 5 per cent of office waste recycled to 50 per cent within 3 years

Challenges:

  • Educating people at the 33 acre site which receives over 90,000 visitors and accommodates in excess of 2,000 staff moves each year
  • Establishing waste ‘streaming’ without impacting on costs

  • Office desk bins removed to encourage centralized, recycling points for each building
  • Dedicated waste coordinator and site Image Team appointed to enhance waste management
  • Introduced measurement system to quantify amount of waste generated

Benefits:

  • Exceeded targets to increase volume of office waste recycled by 53 per cent within 3 years
  • BP achieved ISO 14001 accreditation, directly supporting its corporate values
