Building Sustainable Communities

Chicago from Millennium Park

Johnson Controls helps city and county governments get the most from their budgets through a comprehensive approach to sustainable community practices - from green buildings and renewable energy to water and traffic infrastructure improvements. And we contribute to economic development through job creation. Did you know that for every $1 million dollars spent with Johnson Controls on an energy efficiency project, there is estimated to be up to $3 million of new spending in the community and up to 26 jobs created*.

Our approach to community sustainability programs involves:
Renewable Energy
Johnson Controls has a business unit specifically dedicated to renewable energy. Our renewable experts around the country, focus on designing, installing and servicing geothermal, solar, biomass, wastewater methane, wind and other renewable sources as energy supply options for customers. Our customers include counties, as well as cities, states, school districts and private businesses.

Energy Efficiency
Energy efficiency is our core business. We provide a wide variety of technologies and strategies, including our Metasys building automation and control systems, which integrate and control energy consuming equipment in buildings, and our YORK chillers with variable speed drives, which are among the world’s most energy efficient. Additionally, we provide infrastructure improvements for municipalities that include creative energy efficiency technologies, such as energy efficient street lighting and LED traffic lights.

Water Utilities and Water Quality
Johnson Controls helps municipalities and counties upgrade water meter systems and waste water treatment facilities as part of a comprehensive approach to infrastructure improvements. Our automated meter reading (AMR/AMI) solutions pay for themselves through accuracy improvements of the metering system, the implementation of more efficient meter reading technologies, and reduced meter reading costs.

Green Buildings
As a leading contributor to the development of the USGBC’s LEED rating system, Johnson Controls has an understanding of the financial, environmental and social factors that lead a community to pursue sustainable green buildings. By effectively aligning our processes and solutions to the green building model, we help our clients design, build, renovate and operate the most efficient, economical and environmentally responsible buildings possible.
