Latin America Retailer Achieves LEED® Goals
Falabella is expanding across South America with a focus on efficiency
The largest department store chain in Latin America is going green!
With the help of Johnson Controls, Falabella has achieved LEED® certification in several of its retail stores and is working toward a LEED® Volume Build Prototype Certification for the company's remaining locations.
Falabella currently owns 79 department stores, 108 home improvements stores and 55 supermarkets in the region. According to the Wall Street Journal, the company aims to invest $3.51 billion between 2011 and 2015 to open 215 new stores and 16 new shopping malls. The new investment plan will nearly double the number of stores Falabella operates in Chile, Peru, Argentina and Colombia.
Johnson Controls will work with Falabella to ensure its stores operate efficiently while minimizing environmental impact through:
- Renewable energy
- Natural ventilation
- Photovoltaic panels to provide electricity for security lighting
- Solar water heaters
- Daylighting
- Water efficiency measures
- High efficient HVAC systems
- Fully integrated building systems control
- Extensive training to operations staff
According to Falabella, retail traffic has increased in its LEED® certified store now that it's a more comfortable environment for shoppers. The company credits Johnson Controls for a design that supports Falabella's reputation for modern, energy efficient and high-quality stores.
Johnson Controls is continuing to develop its relationship with Falabella and expand its influence in green initiatives throughout South America. As a result, our current partnership is working toward LEED® Certifications in Colombia, Peru, Chile and Argentina.
