Igniting Creative Energy (ICE) Challenge

National Student Competition Adds New Category in its 10th Year

For the past decade, the Igniting Creative Energy (ICE) Challenge has called on students to use their creativity, skills and talents to explore new ways to make a difference in the way energy is used. To mark this milestone, Johnson Controls is adding ICE Water, a new category for the competition that adds a water education component to the traditional energy and environmental educational objectives.

ICE Water is designed to encourage students – kindergarten to 12th graders – to think about water conservation as they consider what an individual, family or group can do to make a difference in their homes and communities. Water efficiency is becoming an increasingly important issue. A 2008 study by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency showed nearly 36 states will expect to face water shortages in the next five years.

Whether focused on water or energy conservation, students interested in participating in the ICE Challenge should know:

  • All ICE Challenge entries must be postmarked on or by March 4, 2011. Enter by Feb. 18 to qualify for early bird drawing.
  • In addition to the national winner, the highest scoring student in each qualifying state or province will receive recognition as the State or Province winner. Through the Johnson Controls Blue Sky Involve program ICE winners are encouraged to team up with a Johnson Controls employee to work on a environment project in their community.
  • A total of five Grand Prize winners (four students and one teacher) will travel to the 2011 United States Energy Efficiency Forum (EEF). The winners will share their winning projects with national leaders and energy policymakers.

The Challenge is a partnership program developed by Johnson Controls and the National Energy Foundation. Johnson Controls funds the Challenge through an educational grant with additional support from the National Energy Foundation. Additional services provided by Kohler Co.
