The survey is part of a research project called Oxygenz, designed to gauge the expectations of Generation Y members across the world, including those in the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, India and China. Globally, more than a billion young people are considered members of Generation Y; those who are currently between the ages of 15 and 24.

In addition to flexibility, the research indicates Generation Y also values environmental sustainability. Ninety-six percent of global respondents desire an environmentally-friendly workplace, but not at the expense of contemporary design. Nearly half (47 percent) of all respondents want solar panels on site at work, and more than 70 percent want recycling programs in the office. This generation also expects ample breakout rooms and coffee bars in the workplace.

Top priorities for attracting ‘Generation Y’ workers in the United States include:

Work location
  • 79 percent prefer to work in an urban setting against 21 percent in a rural setting, second only to the percent that prefers an urban setting in India
47 percent prefer natural light in their working environment

When asked about their preferences for traveling to work, Gen Y respondents in the United States stated:
  • Car: 51 percent with 34 percent preferring to drive a hybrid car, the highest of any country serveyed
  • Walking: 18 percent
  Public transport: 15 percent
  Cycling: seven percent
  Motorcycle or scooter: nine percent

The top three priorities for United States Gen Y's when choosing an employer:
   Meaningful work
  Quality of life
  Work colleagues

The survey was developed by Johnson Controls in conjunction with Haworth, a global leader in the design and manufacture of office furniture, and U.K.-based design consultancy, iDEA.
