Annual energy savings from Helena Housing Authority facilities sponsors youth program
Helena Housing Authority (HHA) facilities in Helena, Mont., have been providing affordable housing to the state’s most in-need residents for more than 60 years. A recent performance contract with Johnson Controls helped save $210,000 from energy efficiency upgrades. The savings helped pay for Focus on Mentoring, a photojournalism program offering their youth residents experience they may never have received.
The five-week program was available at no cost to youth from 13 to 18 years old, and offered students the opportunity to learn photography and computer skills, including:
- An introduction to camera and computer operations
- An overview of news photography, feature photography and photo editing
- Training on how to build a portfolio to present their work to future employers
The youth were handed cameras, were taught photography basics, and, under the guidance of local mentors, they captured images from events and landmarks around town. The hands-on experience provides the youth with valuable job skills, and with learning the importance of sustainability through digital documentation of their communities and environment.
At the end of the program, the participants showed off their work to the Helena Housing Authority Board and explained the motivation behind a few of their photographs.
