Celebrating 125 Years!

Honoring our past. Inspired by our future.

Warren Johnson

We're so proud to celebrate 125 years of making buildings more efficient for our customers!

Ours is a rich history that began back in 1883, when entrepreneur and inventor Warren Johnson pioneered an idea that started a company, the room thermostat. He was a professor at the State Normal School in Whitewater, Wisconsin at the time, and with Wisconsin winters and room temperatures either too hot or too cold, Professor Johnson wanted to create a more comfortable learning environment. After three years of experimenting, he installed his electric tele-thermoscope in classrooms. It was an invention that launched a company and an industry.

In the 125 years that followed, Johnson Controls endured the economic impact of wars and a depression; managing to maintain growth and success. Today, the company has:
Three core businesses (Building Efficiency, Automotive Experience and   Power Solutions)
142,000 employees
200 million vehicles
12 million homes
One million commercial buildings worldwide

We consider our 125th anniversary a time for reflection. It is a time to applaud the accomplishments and recognize the contributions of our company and impressive history. It is a time to look toward the future and to be inspired by the opportunities.
