Teen Conservationists Dig In

Teens with hands in the air

A program promoting environmental stewardship among city teens has just wrapped up its fifth season of success!

In Milwaukee, Baltimore and Detroit, 180 central city high school students participated in the Conservation Leadership Corps (CLC) summer youth employment program. The six-week program offers meaningful summer work focused on environmental stewardship and conservation, and gives teens an opportunity be involved in:

  • native planting
  • new trail development and maintenance
  • outdoor classroom and native timber bench construction
  • removing invasive species and garden installation

In all three cities, students worked on various projects in their local parks and urban farms. In Milwaukee, the teens also pitched in to help in response to devastating floods.

The CLC program is one of Johnson Controls’ key philanthropic programs with locations also globally. The Student Conservation Association (SCA) along with many strategic local partners manage the summer program that promotes environmental stewardship, leadership, and teamwork skills through hands-on conservation projects. During theprograms in each of the three cities, Johnson Controls hosted a career development day where students learned about sustainability, energy efficiency and how to shape their career path.
