Johnson Controls offers a family of advanced battery products for enhanced performance and value in today’s and tomorrow’s vehicles, including:
  • Absorbent Glass Mat Batteries (AGM)
  • Modular Battery Systems
  • PowerWatch™ System

Absorbent Glass Mat Batteries (AGM)

Johnson Controls has developed absorbent glass mat (AGM) technologies in both spiral and flat plate configurations. The spiral wound product lines are produced in North America, while the flat plate products are developed and produced in Europe. Both technologies are in active development and can be made available globally for new OEM vehicle applications. The state-of-the-art electrical performance of AGM products is enhanced by their superior cycle life and vibration resistant characteristics.

Modular Battery Systems

The Modular Battery System is designed to meet the safety, comfort and size requirements of vehicle interior environments. The fully-integrated system includes the battery, battery tray and hold-down, and all the fasteners to mount these components in the vehicle. This “all in one” battery system would allow automotive manufacturers to reduce costs associated with assembly and minimize storage space requirements. It would also simplify purchasing as the battery components can be purchased from a single supplier. Future versions of the system may include fluid reservoirs, power distributor box, and other underhood components to further simplify installation.

PowerWatch™ System

Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) combine the internal combustion engine of a conventional vehicle with the battery and electric motor of an electric vehicle, resulting in twice the fuel economy of conventional vehicles. Hybrid vehicles need a PowerWatch™ System to monitor the state of the battery and ensure it has sufficient charge for the many roles it plays in helping to operate the vehicle. For example, the engine of the car typically turns off when the car is stopped and idling for a certain length of time. However, should the PowerWatch™ System determine that there is not sufficient charge in the battery to re-start the car, the engine will remain operating. The PowerWatch™ System also notifies the vehicle operator, in advance, when the battery needs to be replaced.
