Johnson Controls Power Solutions not only develops innovative technologies, chemistries and processes for advanced energy storage applications, we work to bring sound environmental and industry specific policy to the forefront of state and national government relations.

Power Solutions has testified on and helped to enact significant pieces of federal legislation, including:

  • The Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Incentive Program (Sec. 136 EISA), an automotive industry loan program passed as part of the national financial system resuce plan
  • A consumer tax credit for PHEVs in the energy tax package that became law October 2008;
  • Increased federal funding for energy storage R&D in both the House and Senate FY09 appropriations bills for the Department of Energy; and
  • Initial funding for EISA Sec. 136 grant program in the FY09 House appropriations bill.
In addition, we have engaged in industry outreach and educational efforts with Congressional offices, including a presentation at a widely attended Capitol Hill briefing on electric drive technology, hosted by the Electric Drive Transportation Association.

Research & Development Contracts/Grants
Johnson Controls Power Solutions has been the recipient of several DOE-sponsored R&D contracts for advanced energy storage technology, as the result of a mutually beneficial relationship with the United States Department of Energy (DOE) that dates back to the 1960s.

  • In 2008 we completed a lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery development contract for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) with the United States Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC) under their cooperative research and development agreement with the DOE. USABC member companies include General Motors, Ford and Chrysler LLC.
