United Nations Global Compact
As a member of the United Nations Secretary General's Global Compact initiative, Johnson Controls formally supports nine principles covering human rights, labor and the environment.
Corporate Environmental Enforcement Council (CEEC)
The CEEC is a cross-industry coalition where company legal, environmental and government affairs professionals can interact and benchmark environmental issues and policies. CEEC exchanges information regularly with U.S. federal and state regulatory agencies so companies can better understand enforcement trends and issues, and regulators can better understand business concerns.
Business Roundtable/Climate RESOLVE
Members are committed to support President Bush's "Climate Vision" program, which targets a greenhouse gas emission reduction of 18 percent nationwide by 2012.
Interfaith Center for Corporate Responsibility (ICCR)
Dialogues with the ICCR provide guidance on emerging sustainability issues and expectations.
U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC)
Promotes buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work. In conjunction with the USGBC, Johnson Controls helped develop the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) system for designing, constructing and operating green buildings.
U.S. Energy Association (USEA)
An association of public and private energy-related organizations, corporations and government agencies. USEA is the co-sponsor with Johnson Controls of the annual Energy Efficiency Forum in Washington, D.C.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
Johnson Controls is a founding member of the Suppliers Partnership for the Environment, an organization of automakers and vehicle suppliers that works with the EPA to develop business-centered approaches to environmental protection. The company also is a charter member of EPA's ENERGY STAR program, which helps businesses and consumers save money and protect the environment through energy efficiency. Johnson Controls received top ENERGY STAR program awards in 1999 and 2001 for energy efficiency leadership in both its own and customer buildings. Finally, the company is a new member of Climate Leaders, an EPA voluntary industry-government partnership that encourages companies to develop long-term comprehensive climate change strategies and set greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals.
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)
As a business partner in the DOE's Rebuild America program, which helps communities address energy and sustainability issues, Johnson Controls provides technical information and helps coordinate energy efficiency projects in state and local governments.
National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA)
The Association is developing more environmentally conscious design of electrical and electronic products and has taken the initiative to reduce the use of hazardous materials. Among its initiatives, NEMA is addressing the growing problem of electronic waste.
U.S. Council for Automotive Research (USCAR)
Formed by the big three automakers, USCAR strengthens the technology base of the domestic auto industry through cooperative, pre-competitive research. Johnson Controls is part of USCAR's effort to develop cradle-to-grave recovery/recycling/reuse strategies for nickel metal hydride and lithium battery chemistries.
World Environment Center
The World Environment Center is an independent, non-profit, non-advocacy organization that works with the private sector, international organizations, non-governmental organizations and academia to advance sustainable development. WEC presented Johnson Controls with its 2004 Gold Medal for International Corporate Achievement in Sustainable Development.
