Senshu University transformed building operations across its Ikuta Campus in Greater Tokyo by implementing the Metasys Building Automation System to centralize control, reduce energy use, and support long-term sustainability objectives.

Balancing student comfort, operational efficiency, and sustainability

Senshu University aimed to create a comfortable learning environment for students while reducing energy costs and improving operational efficiency. Managing energy use across a large suburban campus with more than 30 buildings, including lecture halls, research spaces, and student facilities, required centralized monitoring and control without restricting how students and faculty used learning environment.

Centralized building management with flexible, student and faculty friendly control

Senshu University expanded its Metasys Building Automation System using an extension architecture that enables centralized monitoring of more than 20 campus buildings from a single control room.

As part of this initiative, the university upgraded five Metasys systems, deploying updated Variable Volume Controllers and 32 Network Automation Engines to enable centralized management and consistent control across campus buildings.

HVAC operations combine scheduled control aligned with class timetables and a permit/prohibition approach that allows faculty, staff, and students to adjust classroom air conditioning as needed. This model prevents energy waste in unoccupied rooms while maintaining user comfort and flexibility.

In Building 7, a CO₂-based ventilation control system using total heat exchangers was introduced. The system automatically refreshes indoor air when CO₂ levels exceed defined standards, reducing energy loss while maintaining indoor air quality and supporting student concentration.

Measurable energy savings and increased environmental awareness

Through centralized monitoring and automated control, Senshu University reduced campus energy consumption by more than 400 million kWh per year, achieving approximately 25% energy and cost savings across the university. In Building 7 alone, energy use fell by more than 1.11 million kWh annually, delivering an energy-saving effect of approximately 70%.

Beyond operational improvements, the initiative enhanced the learning environment and increased environmental awareness among students. Senshu University’s Ikuta Campus has received several environmental and energy-conservation awards, including:

  • Kanto District Energy Conservation Month Award
  • Kawasaki Environmental Showcase Grand Prize

These recognitions position Senshu University as a practical sustainability model for higher-education institutions.
