Battery Technology Research and Development

We’re constantly investing in our vehicle battery research and development capabilities, as well as a network of laboratory and academic partnerships. These help us develop future battery technology and stay ahead of evolving auto industry needs.

Our Facilities

We’ve invested in more than 30 laboratories dedicated to battery and energy storage development and testing in the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Germany and China.

We complement our in-house capabilities with a network of the world’s top scientists, engineers, professors and students.

National Laboratory Partnerships

  • National Renewable Energy Laboratory, EC Power-State College, Pennsylvania, USA and National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Colorado, USA. We’re an industry partner in the Computer-Aided Engineering for Electric-Drive Vehicle Batteries project to accelerate the development and lower the cost of next-generation electric-drive vehicles.
  • Joint Center for Energy Storage Research—Argonne Laboratory, Berkeley Lab, Sandia, SLAC, and Pacific Northwest Laboratory, USA. We’re an industry partner in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Joint Center for Energy Storage Research, which aims to provide energy storage technologies that provide five times the capacity at one-fifth the cost of today’s best lithium-ion systems in five years.
University Partnerships
  • Hochschule Hannover University, Hannover, Germany. University majors in Engineering Design & Production Technology and Sales & Distribution spend three months learning from Johnson Controls professionals with the goal of becoming future employees.
  • Fachhochschule Bielefeld, Bielefeld, Germany. Majors in Electrical Engineering learn from Johnson Controls professionals with the goal of becoming future employees.
  • University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A multimillion-dollar investment by Johnson Controls in four joint laboratories at the College of Engineering & Applied Science that work on next generation of lithium-ion batteries.
  • University of Wisconsin-Madison—Wisconsin Energy Institute, Madison, Wisconsin. A partnership to test, evaluate and optimize battery systems performance and interaction with a vehicle’s power train and electrical architecture and to develop future stationary energy applications.
  • Ohio State University Center for Automotive Research, Columbus, Ohio. A partnership to streamline manufacturing of conventional and start-stop battery manufacturing with prototype equipment and applied R&D.
  • Lawrence Technological University, Southfield, Michigan. A partnership to identify and validate how new battery technologies perform in vehicles using faculty expertise and research facilities in energy storage systems, electrification applications, modeling, simulation and vehicle testing.
  • Clemson University, Greenville, South Carolina. A partnership to understand and model how people drive their vehicles; the results will inform tests on fuel economy and battery usage.
  • Milwaukee School of Engineering, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A partnership with the school’s rapid prototyping lab, which enables us to quickly build and evaluate models of new battery parts.
  • California Institute of Technology Jet Propulsion Lab, Pasadena, California. A partnership to improve lithium-ion automotive battery technology and its ability to perform in very cold environments.
