Protecting Critical Mining Operations with Advanced Vehicle Fire Suppression
Helping ensure safety, compliance and uptime for coal mining equipment in Australia
A major coal mining operation in Hunter Valley, Australia required a reliable fire suppression solution for its heavy-duty water carts operating in extreme conditions. By partnering with Total Fire Solutions and deploying ANSUL® vehicle fire suppression technology, the site enhanced operator safety, achieved regulatory compliance and minimized operational disruption.
Impact Highlights
Enhanced protection for critical assets operating in high-risk, continuous-use mining environments
Full compliance with Australian standards including AS 5062 and MDG 15
Improved uptime and operational continuity through reliable detection and fast-acting suppression systems
Managing Fire Risk in Continuous Mining Operations
Coal mining environments present a unique combination of fire risks. At this Hunter Valley site, water carts and other heavy machinery operate continuously, often only stopping for refuelling or shift changes. This constant operation, combined with high ambient temperatures and heavy dust exposure, increases the likelihood of overheating in critical components such as fuel lines, turbochargers and electrical systems.
These water carts are essential assets - used to control hazardous coal dust and support emergency response - making their protection critical to both safety and productivity
The customer needed a solution that could:
- Withstand harsh, high-temperature environments
- Detect and respond rapidly to fire events
- Meet strict Australian mining regulations (AS 5062 and MDG 15)
- Minimize downtime while remaining easy to maintain and operate
Tailored Fire Suppression for Heavy-Duty Mining Equipment
Working with Total Fire Solutions, the customer implemented a tailored ANSUL fire suppression package across four Komatsu HD-785 water carts.
The solution included:
- ANSUL® Liquid Vehicle Suppression (LVS) System (30-gallon)
- CHECKFIRE® 210 Detection and Actuation System
The LVS system delivered flexibility for complex vehicle layouts, along with dependable performance through external pressurization and multiple actuation options. Its design also supports straightforward maintenance and system recharge.
The CHECKFIRE 210 system provided continuous, automatic fire detection with a rugged control module engineered for high vibration and extreme environmental conditions - ensuring reliable performance in demanding mining applications.
“That system’s so much more reliable… The detection methods are quick, giving operators the best opportunity to actuate the system as early as possible and bring peace of mind.”
Matthew Hopley, Install and Rebuild Manager, Total Fire Solutions
Enhancing Safety, Compliance and Uptime
Installation was completed efficiently at a nearby Komatsu facility, with minimal disruption to site operations. All work followed strict safety and segregation practices in line with Australian guidelines and customer standards.
Each system was fully commissioned with documented compliance, enabling the vehicles to return to service immediately with enhanced protection in place.
The result is a dependable, high-performance fire suppression solution that supports continuous operations while improving safety for both equipment and personnel. Total Fire Solutions continues to recommend ANSUL systems based on their reliability, simplicity and strong customer support.
