Video surveillance helps improve accountability and oversight

A public school system in the American East Coast implemented video surveillance, thermal cameras, portable air filters and access control solutions to improve visibility and reduce blind spots across its campuses.

Impact Highlights

Deterred vandalism, bullying and loitering

Reduced theft incidents

Minimal blind spots across monitored areas

Limited visibility made it difficult to monitor activity on school grounds

The public school system experienced frequent incidents of bullying, vandalism, and theft among students, as well as harassment of faculty and staff. Limited visibility in back parking lots and student pick-up areas made it difficult for administrators to monitor activity on school grounds during and outside of school hours. Members of the public also regularly walked through school property when students were outside, creating additional challenges in overseeing high-traffic areas.

A tailored surveillance strategy addressed campus blind spots

School leaders worked with Johnson Controls to assess conditions across the district. The team met with principals from each school to identify problem areas and review available solutions.

The district selected video surveillance as the primary approach to improve visibility and accountability. Johnson Controls deployed multiple camera types, including fish-eye, 4 way and PTZ cameras, to monitor key areas and reduce blind spots. Throughout the project, Johnson Controls maintained communication with school district officials, security service professionals, and county commissioners to support implementation.

Increased visibility supports accountability across school property

Increased video coverage reduced blind spots and improved visibility across the district's campuses. The school district reported reductions in vandalism, harassment, bullying, and loitering following implementation of the new video system.

Administrators were able to use the system to identify individuals involved in incidents on campus. The district also reported that theft of school property was reduced to almost nothing, and the few incidents that occurred after installation were easily identified using camera footage.
