Jupiter Hospital improves chiller plant efficiency and reduces energy use

Healthcare facilities depend on highly reliable HVAC systems to support patient care, clinical procedures and occupant comfort. At Jupiter Hospital, maintaining these conditions while controlling energy use was a strategic priority.

Before the project, the hospital's chiller plant operated with manual sequencing and operator-driven adjustments. As cooling demand and ambient conditions changed throughout the day, maintaining peak efficiency required ongoing intervention. The hospital wanted to automate plant operations, continuously optimize performance and maintain the high availability required in a critical healthcare environment.

Johnson Controls partnered with Graylinx, a specialist in AI-based building energy optimization and part of the NR Group of Companies, to deploy the Chiller Plant Optimizer (CPO) at Jupiter Hospital. Together, the two organizations combined central plant expertise and advanced optimization capabilities to help the hospital improve plant performance and automate operations.

The project also demonstrated how advanced optimization technologies can be applied in healthcare environments where operational continuity, energy performance and data security are priorities.

Working with Johnson Controls and Graylinx, Jupiter Hospital improved chiller plant performance while reducing the need for manual intervention. By continuously responding to changing load and ambient conditions, the solution helped optimize operations, improve efficiency and support the hospital's support its green-building objectives.

The deployment automated chiller sequencing and operational decision-making, helping deliver more consistent plant performance across the facility. The on-premises architecture also enabled the hospital to maintain control of operational data while supporting its green-building objectives. Key outcomes include:

• Improved plant efficiency from 0.80+ kW/TR to approximately 0.75 kW/TR, representing up to a 10% improvement in energy performance, with further optimization expected as the system continues to adapt to seasonal conditions and changing loads.
• Reduced energy consumption by 300 to 500 kWh per day, with estimated savings of 1.2 to 1.5 lakh kWh annually.
• Eliminated manual intervention in chiller sequencing, with automated stage-up and stage-down operations helping improve consistency across operating hours.
• Maintained operational data on-site through a local deployment architecture, supporting the data security requirements of a critical healthcare environment.
• Supported the hospital's IGBC green-building certification goals through measurable energy performance improvements.

Jupiter Hospital, Dombivli is a state-of-the-art, green multi-specialty hospital serving the Dombivli and Kalyan regions of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Part of Jupiter Lifeline Hospitals, the facility has a planned capacity of 500 beds, including 105 ICU/PICU/NICU beds, and provides advanced healthcare services across more than 30 clinical specialties.
