The widespread use of lithium-ion batteries is creating many challenges for the fire protection industry. Research is ongoing to develop effective fire protection strategies for different lithium-ion battery applications. The situation is very dynamic as continued testing, changes in battery structures and use configurations bring about new challenges every day.
Traditional preaction sprinkler systems and advanced water mist systems are two key fire suppression methods used in data centers. Sprinkler systems provide broad water coverage and are typically used as a last resort to control large fires. Preaction systems mitigate the risk of accidental water discharge on sensitive equipment. Water mist systems use fine water droplets to suppress fires effectively while minimizing water damage to sensitive electronics.
Gaseous systems are sometimes used instead of sprinkler systems, to provide fire protection while removing the risk of water damage. Gaseous systems may also be used as a layer of defense, in addition to a sprinkler system. Johnson Controls offers both inert and halocarbon gaseous systems and can work with you to determine the ideal solution to fit your needs.
Clean agent fire extinguishers are designed for the protection of facilities containing sensitive equipment that could be damaged or destroyed by water, foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide. Electronically nonconductive, leaving no residue, requiring no cleanup after discharge and rated for Class A, B, and C fires, CLEANGUARD+ extinguishers are ideal for data centers and data storage facilities.
