Johnson Controls Receives Two Awards for Exceptional ESG Performance

Johnson Controls' recognition for sustainability stewardship continues in China.
Shanghai, December 21, 2022 ‒ On December 20, Jiemian.com, under Shanghai United Media Group, announced winners of the 2022 ESG Pioneer 60 Awards initiated at Jiemian’s 5th Annual Financial Conference. Johnson Controls was granted the “Top 60 of ESG Pioneer” award for its exceptional environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance and remarkable accomplishments in sustainability. Anu Rathninde, president, Asia Pacific, Johnson Controls, received the “ESG Exploration Character Award of the Year.”
The widespread adoption of the ESG concepts and the promotion of related policies are reshaping the value of companies. The “ESG Pioneer 60 Awards” recognize green companies and ESG pioneers with equal emphasis on economic efficiency and social responsibility and commend companies that actively practice the ESG concepts to encourage green business and focus on sustainability. This program will help China achieve the "Dual Carbon" goal and set a benchmark for excellence in the industry. Receiving the two awards demonstrates Johnson Controls as a leader in practicing the ESG concepts and pursuing green operations.

In general, Johnson Controls is taking multiple measures at the same time in ESG practices. In terms of environmental responsibility, as of 2022 Johnson Controls’ has reduced its emissions intensity by more than 48% and its energy intensity by 18% since 2017. In terms of social responsibility, Johnson Controls is providing help for people through employee volunteering services and charitable donations to build safe, smart and sustainable communities. In terms of corporate governance, Johnson Controls has established Board of Directors and senior leadership oversight over the company’s overall sustainability strategies, goals, ratings, emerging trends, and progresses. Johnson Controls has also included sustainability and diversity goals in senior leaders' performance assessments, which are considered when determining compensation in order to drive effective supervision.
By pursuing sustainability, Johnson Controls has won recognition from multiple renowned organizations. For example, in 2022 Johnson Controls received Platinum status from EcoVadis, putting it in the top 1% of more than 100,000 companies assessed by EcoVadis for leadership across environmental, social and governance issues. In 2022, it was also named #1 in our industry as one of the 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World by Corporate Knights. It has earned AAA Status by MSCI, obtained by just 5% of companies for strong sustainability practiced.
At the recent 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27), Johnson Controls and leaders of many industries held discussions on how to address climate change and achieve net-zero carbon emissions, and also announced the Corporate Coalition for Innovation & Technology toward Net Zero (CCITNZ) together with five other companies.
As a global leader in smart, healthy and sustainable buildings, Johnson Controls has also brought its own ESG practices to the Chinese market, and is sharing insights to the government, organizations and companies in China on development of ESG practices and ESG systems. For example, at the 34th annual meeting of the International Business Leaders' Advisory Council (IBLAC) for the Mayor of Shanghai, Johnson Controls shared how to drive corporate ESG practices as well as empower sustainable business development through ESG practices in the buildings sector. And the announcement of a series of green and low-carbon solutions together with the OpenBlue digital platform will continue to help numerous Chinese customers and partners in various sectors achieve their sustainable development goals.
At this year’s Annual Financial Conference of Jiemian, Johnson Controls delivered a keynote speech titled ESG Practices and Green & Low-Carbon Transformation and also shared the company’s best practices and insights on digital technology, ESG and sustainability with other speakers and panelists from research institutions as well as Chinese and foreign companies.
