Meet Clare

Describe your role at Johnson Controls:
I work on a number of battery level design projects (as opposed to working on individual components). This usually entails analyzing the requirements, capabilities, and performance of new and existing product. I have the opportunity to work with many functional groups outside of engineering to make sure we are aligned with the business and customer needs.

What excites you most about your work?

The opportunity to work on projects and products that will eventually have an impact on people’s daily life. Most people don’t realize the impact a car battery has until it doesn’t work anymore. It may not be the most glamorous business, but it is a pretty complex product that has interesting chemical properties affected by a multi-step manufacturing process. 

What is your favorite project you’ve worked on?

My favorite project is from my second summer as an intern. We wanted to improve the robustness of our batteries in high heat climates so I designed an experiment to look at the temperature profiles under the hood of the car and inside the battery. I also looked at the differences in the temperature profile when the battery had a heat shield. It was exciting to install these batteries in our taxi fleet and then get the data back to analyze and draw conclusions. One of the really cool things about this project is how often I’ve been asked to share my data and conclusions. As recently as a month ago, someone asked me to send over the work I had done so that they could share this information with our customers.

What do you like about working in Milwaukee?

Being at the Power Solutions and Corporate headquarters allows me to meet many leaders of the organization in many different functional groups.  It’s not every day you can go down to the cafeteria for lunch and stand behind the CEO in the sandwich line.

What inspires you the most?
I’m inspired and motivated by the thought that my generation is going to be leading companies like Johnson Controls very soon. We’ll get to decide the direction of the company at some point so my goal is to learn as much as I can now to make more informed decisions in the future.

Clare's Day in the Life Diary

7 a.m.

I get to work every day at 7 a.m. I had two late indoor soccer games last night, so today I came to work with a big Starbucks Frappuccino. I start by checking and responding to emails. Next, I take a look at my calendar and create a specific list of what I want to accomplish today.

8 a.m.

I head to a team meeting for a project that is improving the life of our battery. We review the action item list from last week’s meeting and go over any updates. Last week we exited out of the first phase and now the real engineering work will begin. I walk out of the meeting with a few assignments that I’ll work on throughout the week.

8:30 a.m.

I work at my desk on a presentation for the vice president of engineering and product development, MaryAnn Wright. Earlier in the week, I presented a project summary to her and she asked me to make a few updates before she shared the presentation with the vice president and president of Power Solutions, Joe Walicki and his team. 

10 a.m.

I attend the Women Resource Network Business Impact Committee meeting. There is an initiative that revolves around the importance of attracting, developing and retaining women at Johnson Controls. I was asked to help gather some data for this project. I have experience in university recruiting, so I volunteered for the “attracting” work stream.

11:30 a.m.

I get lunch with a group of people that I started with as interns. Once or twice a week, we get together to catch up.

1 p.m.

I start data analysis at my desk for a strategy deployment project that I’m leading. I was selected to work on this project two weeks ago so I’m currently defining the scope of the project and figuring out the timing and resources that I’ll need.

2 p.m.

I meet with the working team for an ongoing project that is measuring our product’s performance to make sure that we continue to meet our customers’ expectations. Individuals from many functional groups (Product Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing Engineering and Operations) are on the call to present updates and review data on trials that we’re running.

3:30 p.m.

I get back to my desk and respond to emails. I start to work on action items that I’ve been assigned throughout the day. I try to finish as much as I can and then leave post-it notes on my desk for the items I wasn’t able to close out. I do this to remember where I left off when I get in the office tomorrow morning.

5 p.m.

I head to the onsite Johnson Controls gym to work out before going home for the night.
