Meet Dayra


1. What made you apply to Johnson Controls? 
I really believe Johnson Controls has a great future. Our values, our leaders, our focus on employees’ wellbeing and career growth – all of the above have made these past nine years very engaging for me and I am very proud to work for the company.

2. What is your role at Johnson Controls? Describe what you do.

My position is Global Laboratory Area Manager and my duties are to supervise the work performed in three labs: Electrical, Physicochemical and Metrology. In addition, I am in charge of automotive battery and component testing for all our global battery plants. One of my main duties is to help promote the development of our laboratory personnel through technical education and always reminding them about safety in our workplace.

3. What excites you most about your work?
What I enjoy the most is coordinating various efforts to achieve common goals. I also love to get our team participating in brainstorming to find creative solutions for improving quality, safety, productivity and analytical development.

4. What do you love most about what you do?
Delivering personalized services to our customers and being a trustworthy partner.

5. What's the most interesting challenge you’ve faced in your current role?
Developing leadership skills to be able to lead and grow my team.

6. What is your favorite project you’ve worked on?
My favorite project was the Inmetro Certification back in 2014 to assure compliance with ISO/IEC 17025. It was a great cross-team collaborative effort that was recognized with a company Merit Award for the entire team.

7. What do you like about working in Mexico?
In Mexico, we have a great team that is full of new ideas for innovation and continuous improvement, which makes our work better and more effective every day.

8. What do you like most about working for Johnson Controls?
The opportunity to work on projects that bring together laboratories from all around the world. At the same time, Johnson Controls financial stability and culture promotes open dialog. We are developing both employees and our internal processes to find the best possible way to get things done.

9. What inspires you the most?
The ability to go beyond expectations, continuous improvement and technology advances, and also working in a team.

10. Who inspires you the most?
People who made big changes in their environment through their efforts like Marie Curie, Margaret Thatcher, Ken Carter, Ben Carson or Stephen Hawking.

Dayra's Day in the Life Diary
7 a.m.

Warming up

I come in early to have time to read through emails and be in the office in automotive battery plant in Cienega, Mexico, to greet each employee as they arrive. At 7:05 a.m. we all do a little work out to stimulate our cardiovascular system and stretch out our limbs to help prevent injuries. 

7:15 a.m.

Round robin

Three 15-minute meetings follow where I get to hear what’s going on with the teams I supervise: Physicochemical Laboratory, Metrology and Electric Laboratory. We check battery samples we received over night and each team member writes down their scheduled tasks on our white board. Also, this is when we discuss any urgent matters to be dealt with immediately.

8 a.m.

Time for a global call

A global lab weekly staff meeting comes next, and in 60 minutes I leave with a newly assigned task to standardize our safety programs across our Power Solutions labs. 

9 a.m.

Let's get analytical

Jumping to another call, our advanced labs group discusses developments in new methods and battery performance testing. We also share best practices among our labs from around the world.

9 a.m.

Customer first

For the next two hours I review customer requirements for battery performance, which then need to be reflected in a new analytical method we will use to assess component materials. This gives me an opportunity to stay connected to our customers and to see if we have any problems to be addressed.

11:45 a.m.

Safety time

Every day we have a 15-minute safety discussion to remind the team of safe behavior importance and talk about risks associated with working in a lab. I’m impressed with the response and bright ideas that the team members express to keep us all safe!



Me and my team then get up and head to the cafeteria for lunch. All sitting around one table, even though it’s 11 of us and the table has only eight chairs, we manage to be together! This is a great time for sharing more personal stories and to discuss topics not related to work.

1 p.m.

Keeping us on budget

Another task I am responsible for is managing our budget. I spend an hour going over purchase orders for lab materials, maintenance and new equipment installations.

2 p.m.

Continuously improving

For the next two hours I listen to a report out on the Green Belt continuous improvement projects being led by five of my team members. I also use this time to visit several other departments to say ”hi” and follow up on key initiatives we are working on together

4 p.m.

Last item on the calendar

Once a week the lab team gets together to discuss what activities we can do to inspire engagement of our employees, act on innovative ideas for improving the way we work, or just simply to discuss any open topics.. After this meeting I ensure no other urgent items have come up. If there is nothing, I happily head home.
