The evolution and innovation of data center technology is driving significant changes in the HVAC industry. As the data center market continues to grow, contractors will have to adapt to the shifting market as increasing technology demands will impact their businesses.

Angela Harris, editor of The News recently spoke with Michael Zarrilli, executive director of data center solutions, Johnson Controls about the company’s work in the data center space, the trends the industry should adopt now and be prepared to see in the near-future, and the technology and methodologies that is fueling data center efficiency. Mike discloses a few key data center trends taking shape, including more partnerships amongst data center infrastructure players, the movement towards liquid cooling and modularity as an increasingly popular data center design trend.

“Modularity can allow data center providers to build out the HVAC system as the data center is itself built out. We have products that help enable this and allow data center providers to build in a very effective manner without stranding cooling capacity until the whole data center is built out.”

— Michael Zarrilli, executive director of data center solutions, Johnson Controls

One of Johnson Controls products that helps with the modularity design trend is the YORK® Mission Critical DEC Air Handling Unit, Zarrilli shares in the article. This product has a partial-power usage effectiveness of less than 1.1 and is designed to meet phased data center expansion strategies.
