Fire risks in complex automated storage

Frasers Group’s Mansfield warehouse spans 13,000 m² and uses a dense automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS). Its six-meter-high rack structure and lack of flue spaces create a solid wall of storage, making fire detection and extinguishment extremely challenging. Traditional firefighting methods cannot easily reach deep-seated fires, increasing risk to stock and operations.

Building a fire protection strategy for a complex warehouse

To protect its growing logistics hub, Frasers Group and Johnson Controls implemented a fully integrated fire detection, suppression and extinguishment system designed for its unique ASRS configuration. The approach combines advanced detection with precise extinguishment to ensure resilience and compliance:

  • Infrared thermal imaging cameras provide early detection, even in smoke-filled environments.
  • Automated water monitors deliver targeted extinguishment, discharging 950 liters per minute over a 900 m² zone.
  • Integrated with the existing sprinkler system, the solution meets offers both automatic and manual control options for local fire brigades.

“Our just-in-time business model means any unplanned disruption would greatly affect our bottom line. With Johnson Controls, we built a fire safety system that satisfies stakeholders and ensures continuity in the face of crisis.”
