Protecting Mexico’s cultural heritage through advanced fire safety systems
Safeguarding a world-renowned museum with fire detection and suppression solutions
Impact Highlights
Comprehensive fire detection coverage across approximately four hectares
Clean-agent fire suppression for sensitive collection
Protection of more than 600,000 cultural artifacts
Protecting irreplaceable cultural heritage from fire risk
The National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City is one of the most important cultural institutions in Latin America, housing more than 600,000 archaeological, ethnographic, and anthropological objects. Protecting this irreplaceable collection from fire risk was essential to preserving the museum’s legacy and ensuring visitor safety.
Given the value and sensitivity of the artifacts, the museum required a fire protection strategy that would deliver early detection and effective suppression without damaging collections. The project also needed to comply with regulatory requirements and adapt to the museum’s large, open spaces and diverse risk areas. Johnson Controls worked closely with the museum’s Museography, Restoration, and Security teams to assess needs and define the optimal solution.
Integrated fire detection and suppression tailored to a museum environment
Johnson Controls designed and implemented a comprehensive fire safety solution to protect the National Museum of Anthropology’s extensive and highly sensitive collections. The approach combined early detection, targeted suppression, and centralized monitoring to reduce fire risk while preserving valuable artifacts.
The solution included:
- Simplex® fire alarm and detection system with approximately 1,600 devices, including detectors, manual stations, strobe lights, and specialized technologies such as Photobeam for large, open areas
- Two Simplex 4100 control panels providing centralized oversight and continuous monitoring across the museum’s facilities
- Fire suppression systems installed in 24 specific areas, selected based on the risk profile and sensitivity of each space
- Ansul® SAPPHIRE clean-agent systems to protect libraries and vaults without damaging artifacts or emitting harmful substances
- CO₂-based suppression systems in electrical and mechanical rooms to control fires without harming critical equipment
Together, these systems provide comprehensive protection across the museum’s four-hectare site while supporting regulatory compliance, rapid response, and the long-term preservation of Mexico’s cultural heritage.
“Thanks to Johnson Controls and the Board of Trustees, the installation of this first-class equipment in the National Museum of Anthropology became a reality we needed for peace of mind.”
