World Facility Manager Day
Celebrating the people powering smarter, more connected spaces [+ free FM resources]
Highlights
- Facilities management has evolved into a strategic driver of business performance
- FM professionals are taking on expanded roles across sustainability, experience and operations
- Technology is empowering FMs to work more proactively, but people remain at the center
Established by Global FM in 2009, World FM Day was created to elevate the profile of facilities management professionals and recognize the critical role they play in the built environment.
Seventeen years on, both the nature of that role—and its impact—have evolved significantly. The role of the facility manager, for decades focused on maintenance and day-to-day operations, has expanded into something far more strategic. Today, facilities teams help organizations operate more efficiently, support employee productivity and advance sustainability goals. In many cases, they are no longer just supporting the business, they’re helping drive it forward.
To show our appreciation for FM professionals and the invaluable impact they have on our spaces, we’re exploring the expanded role and importance of the facility manager in the age of digitalization. Plus, we’re sharing free resources to empower FMs with the knowledge and tools most crucial to their job today.
From behind-the-scenes to center stage
Traditionally, facilities management has been viewed as a cost center focused on minimizing expense, waste and disruption to operations. Today, organizations are looking to their buildings to do more: reduce energy consumption, support sustainability goals, enhance occupant experience and contribute to revenue growth. Facilities teams sit at the center of this opportunity.
“What I see time and time again is that facility managers are right in the middle of everything — operating the building efficiently, keeping occupants comfortable and managing the whole ecosystem of suppliers and contractors around it,” says Kieran Sexton, Associate Director, Technical Solution Architects at Johnson Controls.
Leaders increasingly recognize that buildings are not just physical assets, they are environments that shape how people work, interact and perform. Facilities professionals play a direct role in enabling those outcomes, and as a result, are gaining a stronger voice in strategic decision-making, influencing everything from operational efficiency to workplace experience.

A more connected and complex environment
At the same time, the environments FMs manage have become more complex. Building systems that once operated independently, like HVAC, lighting and security, are increasingly interconnected. The convergence of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) has created new opportunities, but also new expectations. Facilities teams are now navigating a landscape where data, systems and people are more closely linked than ever before. This requires new skills, new tools and new ways of working, including increasingly relying on AI and automation.
According to the 2026 AI & Digitalization in Facilities Management Report:
- 61% of FM survey respondents say they plan to implement or expand AI usage within the next year
- 24% point to enhanced building automation and integration as the top new capability that would make operations more resilient and efficient
- When asked what change or new capability would most help their team perform more effectively and efficiently, the top response was more automation of routine tasks.
Technology platforms can help unify these systems and provide greater visibility, enabling facilities teams to better understand what is happening across their buildings and respond more effectively. But while technology plays an important role, it is the expertise of FM professionals that turns insight into action.

Expanding responsibilities, growing impact
The scope of facilities management continues to grow. Today’s FM professionals are not only responsible for maintaining building systems; they’re also expected to:
- Support sustainability and energy efficiency initiatives
- Enhance workplace and occupant experience
- Drive smarter use of space
- Contribute to broader business performance goals
This expanded role reflects a broader shift in how organizations view their built environment: not as a cost to manage, but as an asset to optimize.
From reactive to proactive
One of the most significant changes in facilities management is the move toward more proactive operations. With better access to data and insights, facilities teams can identify issues earlier, prioritize actions more effectively and reduce the need for reactive interventions.
“Facility managers are basically the people making sure no one notices the building—because everything just works,” says Sexton.
This shift empowers FMs to spend less time responding to problems and more time focusing on planning, optimization and continuous improvement.

Shaping the future of work and sustainability
Facilities professionals are also playing a key role in helping organizations navigate major shifts, including hybrid work, new regulatory and reporting requirements, and sustainability commitments. Buildings must now be more flexible, more responsive and more aligned with the needs of occupants. At the same time, organizations are under increasing pressure to reduce energy use and carbon emissions.
Facilities teams are tasked with balancing these oft-competing priorities, helping organizations create environments that maximize occupant experience and productivity while at the same time remaining efficient, adaptable and sustainable.

A role that continues to evolve
As we recognize World FM Day, one thing is clear: the role of facilities management is more dynamic and impactful than ever. FM professionals are problem-solvers, strategists and enablers of performance. They bring together people, processes and technology to create environments that work – efficiently, sustainably and effectively.
Technology will continue to play a growing role in this evolution. But it is the expertise, adaptability and leadership of facilities professionals that make that transformation possible.
On World FM Day, we celebrate the people behind the buildings, and the critical role they play in shaping the future of organizations everywhere.
