At Johnson Controls, sustainability is part of how we create lasting performance. It shows up in the places our customers depend on every day. Hospitals that cannot afford downtime. Data centers powering the AI economy. Research and university campuses where discovery happens.

“With energy prices on the rise, the most forward‑looking companies are treating energy efficiency as a business strategy to drive every dollar into innovation, technology adoption and competitive advantage. Energy efficiency is one of the fastest ways to lower operating expenses, reduce emissions and improve performance at the same time. At Johnson Controls, we’re proud to help customers turn decarbonization into a source of financial strength and competitive advantage.”
‒ Katie McGinty, Chief Sustainability and External Relations Officer

Our 2026 Sustainability Report brings this focus to life. It reflects how we are making progress in our own facilities and how we are working alongside customers to use energy more productively, operate with greater precision and reduce emissions in the environments that quietly keep people, businesses and communities moving.

Across the environments we support, energy demand is rising and operating conditions are becoming more complex. In response, customers are looking for ways to improve efficiency, control cost and maintain reliability at the same time. Using energy more intelligently allows customers to reduce waste while strengthening performance. We see this in healthcare environments where uptime is critical, in data centers managing increasing compute density, and across large research and university campuses where infrastructure decisions are made with long time horizons in mind.

In each scenario these are active operating environments. Across thousands of customer projects, this work has contributed to:

  • 43 million metric tons of CO₂e avoided – the equivalent of nearly 6 million U.S homes-worth of emissions
  • $9.5 billion in energy and operating cost savings

Those outcomes reflect measured performance across a wide range of facilities and applications. Progress at this scale requires sustained investment. That is why our product innovation continues to focus on efficiency, precision, and system intelligence across HVAC, thermal management, controls, and digital optimization. This work supports customer needs in mission critical environments, including data centers, healthcare, life sciences and research facilities.

The same approach applies to the progress we are making as a company. We are pleased to report that we are ahead of pace to meet and exceed our 2030 sustainability commitments. With a 46% reduction against our 2017 baseline, our operational carbon emissions are coming close to the 55% reduction we committed to achieve in 2030. At the same time, we are accelerating impact across our value chain, delivering a 33% reduction in Scope 3 emissions from the use of sold products through continued product innovation, including lower embodied carbon chillers with up to 44% lower embodied carbon.

The people behind the work

The report also reflects the work of our people. Behind each project are Johnson Controls colleagues who design systems, support installations, service equipment, and who work alongside customers in operational environments every day. This includes engineers, technicians, field teams, and operations staff who support facilities where performance, safety and reliability are essential.

Together, our 90,000 colleagues worldwide contribute to the results detailed in this report, often working behind the scenes in environments that require consistency and precision.

That work, carried out every day across customer sites and Johnson Controls facilities, is what enables the outcomes reflected in our 2026 Sustainability Report.

As this report reflects another year of progress, it is ultimately the work of our people, alongside our customers, that delivers impact where it really matters.
