Visualizing the data center's energy consumption
New regulations for data centers in Germany like EnEfG demand high standards for energy efficiency and management. To be compliant, the data center needed to:
- Implement a comprehensive energy management system
- Establish a measurement concept
- Ensure transparency across all energy flows
- Conduct yearly audits
- Drive continuous energy efficiency improvements
The data center was at the very beginning of its energy measurement journey. Very few measurement points existed, and they didn’t have a digital platform to visualize or analyze the center’s energy consumption.
A seamless system for full data transparency and automated insights
The data center partnered with Johnson Controls to execute the transformation from on‑site analysis to full digital implementation. This ensured the measurement concept, hardware and software worked in concert to deliver reliable data, actionable insights and audit‑ready documentation.
Step 1: Analyze & measure
Experts assessed the infrastructure and designed a measurement concept that covered all main energy consumers – from power distribution to cooling and IT loads.
Step 2: Install modern meters
The team installed precision energy meters that were integrated into the OpenBlue ecosystem to capture high‑quality data at scale.
Step 3: Automate insights with OpenBlue Net Zero Plus
The platform visualized energy flows via intuitive dashboards, calculated Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) using virtual meters, enabled automated energy fault detection, tracked ISO 50001 energy goals and generated audit‑ready reports.
Step 4: Audit & report
OpenBlue produced structured energy reports with key metrics, trend analyses and benchmarking to dramatically simplify internal audit preparation.
Fully compliant and future-ready
- Real‑time energy transparency: end‑to‑end visibility into all relevant energy flows
- Improved audit efficiency: automated, consistent reporting for faster, error‑free ISO 50001 audits
- PUE optimization: simulation and monitoring via virtual meters to enhance overall efficiency
- Data‑driven decisions: accurate live data enables confident operational and investment choices
- Compliance & future readiness: full alignment with EnEfG and ISO 50001, establishing a scalable foundation for ongoing efficiency
By implementing OpenBlue, the operator gained full transparency of energy flows and a durable framework for continuous improvement. The digital platform continues to reduce manual workload, accelerate audits and empower data‑driven management on the path to net zero.
