District-wide energy solutions for an enhanced student experience

A Northeastern public school district was excited to explore how they could lower operating costs through energy efficient solutions. The district needed to upgrade their aging infrastructure, including old lighting in their two high schools, and invest in new, innovative and green solutions to achieve their cost reduction goals. In addition, it was important that any project the district invested in would contribute to the schools’ curriculum and overall learning environment.

Energy efficient solutions for greater output

With a working relationship that spanned over 20 years and a proven history of strong project management and reliability, it was natural for the school district to partner with Johnson Controls for their cost-savings green initiative. The project involved installing new LED lighting fixtures to improve classroom visibility and the overall learning environment. To drive further energy savings, the district upgraded the building automation systems (BAS) in each school to enable advanced performance insights, central monitoring and easier optimization between schools.

In addition, a two-megawatt solar car port was installed in a large parking lot in a multi-school complex, with the ability to generate enough power for three schools. Software was also installed to track solar energy production and allow the district’s science classes to gain educational insights. This merging of the project’s goals with the school’s curriculum was one of the unique values Johnson Controls was proud to provide to this school district.

Continued district improvement, powered by energy savings

Through this project, the district’s commitment to environmental stewardship has been rewarded with an Energy Star award, making them the first recipient for any school in its state. The savings generated by these energy-efficient solutions has supported the district’s capital investments, allowing them to continue to invest in their students and their faculty. And through their partnership with Johnson Controls, the district achieved its goal of integrating building improvements with an enhanced student learning experience.
